Training descriptions
QPR
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. This class is 1 to 2 hours long.
safeTALK
LivingWorks safeTALK is a four-hour training that equips people to be more alert to someone thinking of suicide and better able to connect them with further help. Using a simple yet effective model, LivingWorks safeTALK empowers everyone to make a difference. With over 120,000 people attending each year, it’s the world’s fastest-growing suicide prevention skills training course.
AMSR
This is a full day training for clinicians and those who conduct suicide risk assessments. Unlike other frameworks, the Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk formulation is developed for each individual, taking into consideration their current circumstances. AMSR Training provides a structure for the clinical provider which can be used in the development of a collaborative treatment and safety plan. The training also provides a language for the clinician to use with non-clinical staff who are also involved in the care that the individual is receiving.
ASIST
Trusted by professionals, approved by the World Health Organization and learnable by anyone, LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is the only workshop of its kind.
Updated continually to reflect new knowledge, LivingWorks ASIST has been training people to provide suicide first aid interventions for 40 years. This is a two-day training.
More Than Sad
Parent Education: A 90-minute program teaching parents to recognize signs of depression and other mental health issues, start conversations about mental health with their children, and seek help. Focuses on parents and guardians of teens. Available in Spanish.
Teachers: More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Teachers and Other School Personnel is a 120-minute program that trains educators to identify signs of mental health distress in students and refer them for help. Meets teacher education training requirements in many states. Focuses on high school teachers and school personnel.
Talk Saves Lives
This 45–60-minute Introduction to suicide prevention is The American Foundation Suicide Prevention’s flagship suicide prevention education program that covers the scope of this leading cause of death, what the research has found to be the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, and the strategies that prevent it.
In 2024, this presentation was refreshed based on feedback from presenters, content experts, and people with lived experience. This can be tailored for your specific needs.
Mental Health First Aid
Most of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack — we’d start CPR or call 9-1-1. But too few of us would know how to respond if we saw someone in a mental health crisis.
Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to assist. This evidence-based, early-intervention course, administered by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, is available virtually and in-person and uses community-specific scenarios, activities and videos to teach the skills needed to help. This course is available with a focus on adults as well as one focused on youth.
Suicide to Hope
Suicide to Hope is a workshop for clinicians and other professional helpers who are, or would like to be, involved in ongoing suicide care for people, once they are safe. It assumes that participants are familiar with suicide intervention and can provide suicide first aid. While LivingWorks’ ASIST is not a prerequisite, it is recommended as one way to learn suicide first aid and provides background for suicide to Hope’s learning processes and tools.
